Brown Sounds The Alarm On Drought

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2015/04/09/drought-california-brown/25544867/

California Gov. Jerry Brown warned Thursday that the drought parching his state will lead to a summer of forest fires and potential water shortages.Brown said this drought is worse than the one during his first term as governor in the 1970s, because temperatures are higher and the lack of water (rain and snow) is more pronounced.More than 44% of California is in "exceptional" drought (the worst level of drought). That's the highest percentage of exceptional drought the state has seen this year. It is the highest percentage of any U.S. state.

  1. This is a vital issue that pertains to all of us. We need to come up with a competent solution and fast. The water restrictions that are in place now are a start, but we need to make them stricter for it to have any substantial effect. We should also look for other options to provide drinking water. Fog nets, as used in the Andes in Bolivia, gather clean water from fog. These could be used in foggy areas, such as the Northern California coast. Another possible solution is desalination. New technologies are able to take the salt out of sea water to make it drinkable, but they are costly and inefficient. We should continue to improve this technology to make it work better so it can be used on a large scale.

    1. I agree we do need to find a solution to this problem our there can be a serious consequence, like animals dying and crops being burnt from wild fires.

  3. We need to find a solution to this drought problem as soon as possible. If the area does not get a substantial amount of rain soon it could cause many future problems like forrest fires and dying crops. We need to do more than put a mandatory limit on drinking water. I found it very interesting and concerning that this is the highest level of drought California has seen all year. I wonder if there are any long term strategies we can use to make sure this never happens again.

  6. I didn't know that 44% of California is in "exponential" drought. Will the Governor put a limit on drinking water to aid the people through the drought?

  7. The most interesting thing about your post is that it is going to effect the food that you grow like what was said in the video and there are going to be a lot of forest fires this summer. Also you don't know when the drought is going to stop. I was wondering
How much water is left and when are they going to put limits on water?

  10. The graphics in this article were very eye-opening! It's certainly one thing to hear about droughts in other states and another to actually understand what that implies - especially considering a lot of us over on the East Coast haven't experienced anything similar to that before. I wonder if the drought will spread further out or simply intensify in the areas it's already in.
