Bee Worried

http://www.environmentcalifornia.org/programs/cae/no-bees-no-food

It's a known fact that bees pollinate 71 of the 100 crops that we rely on and use as our daily food supply. Bees are vital to our survival as a species. However, in the past few years, 30% of beekeepers' bees have been dying off. Broader issues such as global warming, habitat loss, parasites, and especially pesticides have been the causes of this drastic dissapearance. If we don't find a way to end this soon, not just the bees lives will be in jeopardy.

  1. I believe the problem is the pesticides we put on our crops is harming the bees, if we stop this maybe it can decrease the amount of bees dying each year?!

  2. Yes Ava, very true. However pesticide use is anything but close to ending. Farmers rely on pesticides to shield their crops from insects and other harmful things. This saves them money, but does nothing for us. In fact, it has only detrimental effects on humans, and as you can see, bees. When bees die, we die, and that is what people need to understand. I'd love to find a way to save bees scientifically, but the change needs to begin with us; farmers, manufacturers, regular people, and those who buy non organic foods, etc.

  3. I think that the main problem is big companies that use these neonics. Unlike our central government, there are no checks and balances between certain businesses. It is hard to bring down a big company; they have too many customers of different opinions who think in different ways. These big companies should pay more attention to the effect of their actions, in my opinion. As a big company, they of all people, should be the more responsible ones, because they have more power and employees. I wonder if the government will do anything that actually directly impacts the companies, so that they are kept in check by someone who takes crises like these more seriously.

  4. If these big companies need the neonics, Is there any thing like them that big companies can use that will not affect the life of the bees?

  6. I think something interesting is that we know we rely on bees, yet the companies ignore the whole thing. Bees are a huge part to our survival. Also I wonder that if people that know about this and they care enough about their future, will they try to alert the government?

  8. I found interesting that California is in bee worried. Like a farmer lost 37 million of his bees in 2013. I wonder what happen to the bees? How can they lost so fast?

  11. It's really interesting how much we depend on bee's for food. Dying bees seems like a big issue in California. If big companies know that the neonics are hurting the bees why don't they stop using them or create something that won't hurt them?
