90% of Ocean Debris is Plastic!

http://www.environmentcalifornia.org/savethebagban

After reading into this stunning article about pollution in the Pacific Ocean I am all for saving the California bag ban. It's the statistics that really caught my attention: For decades, plastic trash has been polluting the Pacific, with damaging results for ocean wildlife. Ninety percent of ocean debris, which harms more than 660 marine species, is made up of plastic trash. This plastic kills thousands of birds, marine mammals and sea turtles each year.

  1. I completely agree with you. After I read this article, I was stunned by the statistics which show that 90% of Ocean debris is plastic. Its also sad about how all plastic affects the marine animals. It affects over 660 species! I think that this article is very amazing about how the California bag ban which will help with the amount of plastic in the ocean. I like how already 138 communities have gone bag free and how action teams are helping out. I know you can help out with the bag ban but could you help out somewhere not in California, such as also in Massachusetts?

  2. Jacob, I agree with you about how the California bag ban should be saved. It's crazy how much plastic is polluting and harming the Pacific Ocean and it's inhabitants. I looked further into the article and read this: "...to a sea turtle, a plastic bag looks like a jellyfish. The sea turtle ingests the bag, which can fill or block the stomach, leaving the turtle to starve and sometimes die." That's horrible, and I'm wondering: how often does this happen? Everyday? If we don't act fast, we will keep killing animals and polluting the ocean.

  3. I agree with you 100%. After reading the article i was just stunned by the statistics. 660 species! I remember hearing about the plastic bag ban last year from Mr Souza and its a very good idea. But i have a few questions. If the plastic bag ban is in place then have the numbers dropped in plastic pollution? Also why would people want to remove the plastic bag ban? Its a good idea that people should follow.

  5. After I read the article, I was shocked by how many marine animals die because of plastic debris! I really hope that the California bag ban will continue doing what they already do. But I am wondering if this problem (plastic debris in the ocean) is only happening in California, or if this is a bigger issue?

  6. I agree with saving the plastic bag ban. It is crazy that 660 marine species are harmed by this! Stores should start using only paper bags or just using no bags at all. But is this just a problem in California or a national problem?

  7. As everyone else has said already, I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU! The main question is what's not to agree with? We got plastic bags, what do people end up doing them if they don't want them? Throw them in the ocean. And what will that end up doing? Like Julian said "660!", yes, "660!" animals are being harmed from the plastic. I love what you chose as your article mainly because I posted about the pollution of the Boston Harbor that we are having now from bacteria. Even though it isn;t exactly the same type of topic, it still revolves around "putting bad stuff in the water".
